U.S. caustic soda exports rose 25% in the first two months.

April 10, 2018

[China paint information] compared with the same period last year, U.S. sodium hydroxide exports increased 25% in the first two months of 2018, partly because Brazil suddenly closed its chlor alkali plant in mid January, leading Braskem to seek imports before restarting

the February export data released by the US International Trade Commission this week showed that in January and February this year, in Brazil, Australia, Jamaica, Canada, Mexico and other places, the shipments of alumina and caustic soda, the main raw material of the pulp and paper industry, increased compared with the same period last year

Brazil is the largest recipient of us caustic soda, receiving 2.56 million metric tons of us caustic soda in 2017

the unit supplying power to Braskem's chlor alkali plant in aragos was damaged by a fire, forcing it to shut down for about two months. During the power outage, Braskem obtained more than 30000 tons of caustic soda from the United States and Brazil to meet the supply demand. According to sources familiar with the company's operations, the plant began to restart in mid March

itc data show that in general, Brazil received a total of 470,2 tons of American caustic soda with polyvinyl butyral film in January and February, an increase of 24% over the same period of the previous year

caustic soda is a by-product of chlorine production in chlor alkali plant, and chlorine is the key raw material of downstream PVC chain. Vinyl chloride and ethylene are mixed to produce vinyl chloride, and the vinyl chloride monomer thus produced is converted into polyvinyl chloride. In the construction industry, it is widely used to manufacture pipes, vinyl substrates and window frames at least 500mm from the lower end of the sample

last Wednesday, China proposed to impose a 25% tariff on 106 US products, including PVC and EDC, in response to the US President Donald Trump's proposal to impose an import tax on US $50billion of Chinese goods. Trump said last Thursday that the United States may impose tariffs on another US $100million of us products. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement last Friday that the Chinese government is unwilling to fight it, but is not afraid of a trade war

China has imposed anti-dumping duties on us PVC. According to a US manufacturer, 306079 tons of PVC imported from the US in 2017 were re exported to Southeast Asia. According to ITC data, China's PVC imports from the United States last year decreased by 25% year-on-year, and the first two months of 2018 decreased by 8.5% year-on-year

but tariff will affect EDC. China is the largest market for us EDC exports. Last year, the total export volume of EDC was 370844 metric tons, accounting for 27% of the total export. However, compared with 2016, China's import volume in 2017 decreased by 25%, because China and other Asian markets operate chlor alkali plants at a high rate to obtain high caustic soda profits, and use the output of chlorine to produce more EDC in China, reducing the demand for imports

according to the latest ITC data, China received 10098 tons of EDC in the first two months of this year according to the requirements of a well-known domestic construction machinery manufacturer, a decrease of 62% over the same period in 2017

the data also shows that the export of us VCM to China increased significantly in February. Most U.S. VCMs are exported to Mexico, Colombia and Canada under contract, and there is almost no spot export. In 2017, China received 268 tons of us VCM, accounting for less than 1% of the total export (1.26 million tons)

however, in the first two months of 2018, China received 3635 tons of us VCM - more than 13 times that of the same period in 2017, or 1.5% of the total shipping volume
